New Jersey Family Leave Insurance
Provided by the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development
Your employer is subject to the Family Leave Insurance (FLI) law under the NJ Temporary Disability Benefits Law.
What is Family Leave Insurance?
FLI provides paid time off so you can:
Bond with a new child within 12 months of birth, adoption, or foster placement.
Care for a seriously ill family member (medical documentation required).
Care for a victim of domestic or sexual violence or their family member.
Who qualifies as a “family member”?
A child ( biological, adopted, or foster child, stepchild or legal ward of a parent), parent, in-law, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, spouse, domestic/civil union partner, or person related by blood to the employee or with whom the employee has a close association that is the equivalent of a family relationship.
Leave Time Available
Up to 6 weeks
Up to 12 weeks continuous or 56 days intermittent (Beginning July 1, 2020)
Two Types of Plans
State Plan – Apply online at myleavebenefits.nj.gov or call 609-292-7060.

New mothers receiving state temporary disability benefits will be guided on how to apply for FLI.
Private Plan – If your employer offers a private, approved plan, they must provide you with all necessary info and forms.
Who Pays?
Employees pay through payroll deductions. Employers must show these deductions on your pay stub or notice.
